Tochigi, Kurobane

Kurobane is in the northeast district of Tochigi Prefecture. It used to be a river port on the Naka River, which divides Kurobane into two parts. The Naka River starts as a clear stream from a volcano, Mt. Nasu, and flows down to the Pacific Ocean in Ibaraki. It is also known for its tasty sweetfish.
There are a few big temples and shrines in Kurobane: Nasu Jinja Shrine, Daio-ji Temple and Ungan-ji Temple. They are all nice tranquil places, rich in history. Kurobane is a bit off the beaten path of regular travelers, but it’s worth visiting, to enjoy a lingering scent of old Japan.
